If you have decided to make some improvements in your dietary habits, you will want to include some healthy food snacks in your plans. The good news is that you don't have to spend a lot of money in order to have healthy snack food around the house. Here are a few suggestions for things to keep around the house.

First, think in terms of plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables. For a quick snack, you can keep carrot and celery sticks in the fridge.  Simply place them in a container with a little water and they will stay crisp for days. You can also slice apples and douse them with lemon or some other citrus juice and keep them in the fridge as well. These healthy options for snacks will provide a satisfying crunch without the burden of preservatives, saturated fats, or a lot of excess carbs.

For packaged snack foods, give some consideration to rice cakes. They are relatively low in carbohydrates and cholesterol in comparison to a lot of other snack foods. The best thing about the rice cakes is that you can flavor them with herbs and spices from your spice rack, or buy them already seasoned.

Nuts are another excellent snack to keep around the house. Of course, you want to watch out for options that are loaded with fats and thus promote cholesterol. However, if you choose to go with unsalted walnuts, almonds, or cashews, you will get the right type of fats that will promote good cholesterol. You don't have to hit the health food store for unsalted nuts like these. In fact, you can find them at many supermarkets.

Dried foods are also great ideas for snacks that provide a lot of nutrients with relatively few contents that are not good for the body. Look into options such as dried fruit and even some forms of jerked meats. These options for healthy snack foods will last for a long time in the pantry and are quite filling. Best of all, they are not expensive, which means they will fit into just about any budget.
