The healthy food industry has grown by leaps and bounds over the years, as Americans become almost obsessed with eating healthy, organic food. As the call for healthy and organic food gets ever-louder, more and more companies are rising up to meet the challenge. As is often the case in a consumer based economy, the supply has risen to meet the demand, and as a result, the health food industry is doing better than at any other point in history.

As the food industry grows, two main things are happening. First, competition drives prices down; it's now possible to buy granola cereal for only a bit more than sugary cereals. Other foods, similarly, decrease in price as more competition develops. Second, it increases the variety of foods available. As more food becomes available, and the choices expand, more people find themselves eating healthy food...which brings us to the second point.

The industry has been doing its share to make sure that healthy food continues to be a high demand item. Advertising consistently reminds us of the benefits--very real--of eating healthy food. And eating right is becoming the "in thing" among the young and hip. The industry knows this, and capitalizes on it. A greater variety of foods than ever before are now being labeled as "health foods," from good for your heart chocolate to low fat, high protein ice cream, to milkshakes made of soy with added calcium.

So what does the growth of the industry mean for you, the consumer? Well, more than anything else, it means a huge upsurge in the number of 'treats' you can eat and feel good about. (A warning: chocolate ceases to be quite so 'healthy' after the tenth or fifteenth bar.) But it also means more choices in traditional health foods, lower prices, and it also means that you should have an easier time finding the healthy foods that you love. The growth of the healthy food industry is a win-win situation.
